Artists' Oil
Colours, Whites 37ml tubes Series 1
- Cremnitz
White* (old fashioned type of lead carbonate. Slower drying
and hence less suitable as primary white than Foundation
White. Stringy consistency)
- Flake
White No. 1* (comparatively quick-drying, more flexible
and durable white, excellent for general use, particularly
tints. Lacks the opacity of Titanium White and the whiteness
of Zinc
White. Stiffer
consistency than No. 2.)
- Flake
White No. 2*
- Foundation
White (ideal for priming or foundation coats. Should be
applied on top of a coat of glue size. Thins with turpentine
or White Spirit. Allow to dry overnite between coats.
Wait 3-4days before overpainting)
- Titanium
White* (whitest and most opaque
of the whites. Modern replacement for Flake White. Strength
may overwhelm weaker, more transparent colours. Fairly
slow drying. Popular as mixing white. Most widely accepted
white in use.)
- Underpainting
White (for general use preparing grounds or mixing into
oil colours. Resists yellowing. Excellent for extensive
modelling. Can be used throughout painting. Dries quickly
to flat-matt finish. Should be applied on top of a coat
of glue size. )
- Zinc
White* (excellent for making tints and glazing.
Least opaque
of whites. Pure, cold white appearance, suitable for mixing
with cool colours. Dries slowly nd tends to form hard
brittle film.
*The
painting whites above should not be used for priming or
extensive
underpainting. The Sunflower Oil in which they are ground
dries very slowly and can cause crackling if subsequent
layers are applied before the previous is thoroughly dry.
However, each has its unique
characteristics when used as an oil colour.
